Buying a Laptop vs Desktop
Figure 1: Laptop.
Your current computer has matured. Now it's time to purchase a new computer and the question is, "Should I buy a laptop or a desktop?" But just because laptops are the new craze, it does not mean that you should run right out and get one. There are benefits and drawbacks that must be weighed.
Laptop Benefits:
Portability. If you need to carry one for business, then this may be the tool for you. College students frequently need to do this, or at least think they do. (Many students do not carry their computers to class, and as such maybe could have used a desktop.)
Small Size: Laptops take up less space than your average desktop.
Laptop Drawbacks
Easy to steal It is just as easy for someone else to walk off with it as it is for you. Laptops are stolen at an alarming rate, because they are just so easy to steal. And when that computer is stolen, not only do you lose the value of the computer, but also all of your valuable data.
Proprietary Parts laptop parts are "proprietary" which means that if your laptop breaks, only the company that made it will be able to fix it, and after the warranty expires they will be very happy to charge you an exorbitant price for that service. While with a desktop computers, you are able to take advantage of your local computer repairman which will often fix it at a much more reasonable rate.
Laptops are more expensive. For the price of an average laptop, you could purchase a much more powerful desktop. Of course, what you are paying for is the portability of a smaller design, but is that worth it? While it can be fun to take your computer with you on a vacation, how often do you need to a computer on vacation?
Typical Desktop
Desktop Hybrid.Desktops are generally faster .You can buy a fast laptop, but are generally looking at $1000 to $3000!
Typical Desktops are rather large towers, which have space for multiple hard drives, multiple CD/DVD drives, Various input output devices including a TV Tuner. But you can also get a Desktop Hybrid, which takes much less space on you desk. Some of these have actually put the computer inside of the Monitor! (remember you cannot add much to this type.)
Netbooks vs Laptops The netbook is another portable device, that is less expensive, smaller than a laptop, often less than 3 pounds, can fit in a briefcase, pocketbook or backpack, has long battery life, somewhat slower than a laptop, can access the internet, can run many applications ok, but you need to be aware of its shortcomings. It’s small size is it strong point (and also it’s weak point!). It is highly portable, but keys are very small. This trend is too new for a lot of reliable feedback.
